Why You Need to Stop Watching the News NOW!
studies have shown that people in high income countries live in the safest time in recorded history. And yet, we are more stressed out than ever. We have more stress related conditions than ever.
Why? What’s going on?
It’s due in large part to the easy access and constant exposure to bad news.
That’s right. You don’t have to actually have been exposed to a traumatizing event to live in a body that responds as a traumatized person. Witnessing the many incidents of violence, war, threat, and danger on the news is enough to make us afraid and stressed out.
Let’s Do a Little Experiment
Tune into your body and notice what’s there. Notice any areas of tension, any areas that are “braced for impact”, so to speak. How’s your jaw? Are your shoulders raised or tight? How about your back? Your stomach? Any tightness in your throat? How about your ears or forehead? Give yourself a good once over and notice what there is to notice. Now notice any immediate threats in your environment. Is anyone lurking in the bushes? Anything sailing in the air towards you? Anybody yelling in your face? These are “immediate threats.” Anything that might happen doesn’t count. Anything that is upcoming, but is not here now is not an immediate threat. Only count things that are endangering you right now. How many threats are there? If you are like most people, the answer is 0.Since you’re not in any immediate threat, can you relax your body now?
Now what do you think would happen if you took in uplifting images, happy news, and saw all the goodness and light that there is in the world?
Yes! You will feel more hopeful, light, happy, and inspired. You would feel more energized to do good things, smile, laugh, and spread the light we all have inside.
But, I know. You want to stay informed. That’s what the news is for, right?
Well, did you know that there is something called the Good News Network? Yes! They highlight things that uplift us, acknowledge breakthroughs and accomplishments, and spread cheer.
Don’t want to stop watching the news? The Good News Network is a great alternative to doom and gloom news.
Now that’s something I can get behind!
